Over 60 participants in Mullingar duathlon event

The Midland Triathlon Club held a duathlon event at Lilliput, Mullingar on Sunday April 7.

The event included a 5k run followed by a 22k cycle and then another 2.4k run to complete the course. There were 64 participants and out of those, there were 33 who were taking on such an event for the first time.

It was a big undertaking by the club and Karen McGouran was a the Race Director. The Mullingar gardaí had a significant involvement, working diligently to make it a safe and fun event and their assistance in marshalling was crucial.

"We are grateful to the Mullingar gardaí for their support and to all those who took part. It was great to see so many new people taking on the challenge and the feedback was great. Hopefully, we will see some of those joining up with the club going forward," said Patricia Connell, PRO.

The main sponsor as Ciaran O'Brien of O'Brien's garage, Mullingar.

The club would normally organise one duathlon a year, but they are also involved in a local aquathon with some of the neighbouring clubs from other counties, including Longford. The aquathon Involves a swim of up to 750m to 1km followed by a 5k run.

The club has 83 members at present and they are always welcoming new members. They cover a lot of different spheres, like people doing Ironman events.

The club is based mainly around Mullingar and uses the Mullingar Harriers track and the Mullingar town pool for training. The local greenway is convenient for Saturday morning cycles.
