Go Purple Day tomorrow

Mullingar gardaí will be manning information stands in a number of shopping centres around the town tomorrow (Friday May 3) as part of this year's Go Purple Day.

Now in its fifth year, Go Purple Day is An Garda Síochána's national domestic abuse awareness campaign which consolidates community partnerships between domestic abuse support services and gardaí.

Tomorrow morning, gardaí will have information stands at Harbour Place Shopping Centre (9-11am) and at the Tesco shopping centre (9-11am). In the afternoon, local officers will have an information stand at the Fair Green Shopping Centre (2-4pm). Representatives from Westmeath Support Service Against Domestic Abuse will also be in attendance.

Now a national initiative, Go Purple Day is the brainchild of Garda Stacey Looby, who is stationed in Athlone. Garda Looby started the successful fundraiser in 2020, and from humble beginnings it has now been rolled out right across the country.

This year's fundraiser was officially launched recently by Justice Minister, Helen McEntee, who is encouraging everyone to get involved in the initiative by wearing purple, baking purple, sewing purple, or perhaps hosting a purple day coffee morning.
