Rise in thefts from cars, local gardaí report

Local gardaí have noted a general rise in thefts from cars recently, and are advising owners to make sure their vehicles are locked and valuables are well hidden.

Thefts from cars typically rise at this time of the year, when more people are out using natural amenities and regularly park in remote areas while going off to walk, run, swim or cycle.

A local garda spokesperson said the best course of action is take nothing with you on such trips unless it’s absolutely necessary.

He added that keeping a car interior tidy will help deter would-be thieves, and to make sure that items are full hidden – for example, the strap of a bag that has been placed under a seat might still be visible, so make sure valuables are fully hidden.

Separately, two burglaries were reported last Thursday, May 2.

One was at Killynan (Cloughan area) at approximately 1.45pm, and one at Curraghmore between 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

In both cases, cash and jewellery were taken. Entry was via the back door in both cases.

The garda spokesperson reiterated advice to home owners to make sure their property is secure and valuable items are stored safely.

At the time of writing, gardaí reported a quiet weekend in terms of driving while intoxicated. The spokesperson said officers believe drivers have a sense of gardaí being more visible recently.
