Council seeking views on proposed Kilbeggan to Mullingar greenway

Westmeath County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) intend to deliver a greenway from Kilbeggan to Mullingar, which will complete a link in the established greenway infrastructure in this region.

It will provide a high-quality greenway, designed to promote cycling, walking and other non-motorised travel.

In 2023, Westmeath County Council appointed RPS to deliver the Kilbeggan to Mullingar Greenway Project through Phases 1 to 4 of the TII Project Management Guidelines.

In Phase 1 (Concept and Feasibility), the first public consultation was held in May 2023 and displayed the study area for the project.

Feedback from that public consultation helped inform the identification of areas of interest and constraints, which in turn informed the development of route corridor options within which a route for the greenway could be developed.

Following an appraisal process, two feasible route corridor options have been identified, (see map).

The route corridor options have been developed to connect likely tourism and leisure attractions and use publicly owned land where possible.

Both route corridor options start in Kilbeggan Harbour and end in Mullingar; one corridor is west of Lough Ennell and one is east of Lough Ennell.

Phase 1 (Concept and Feasibility) of the project is complete and the project has moved into Phase 2 (Option Selection).

Phase 2 (Option Selection) involves the assessment of the route corridor options to identify a preferred route corridor. Westmeath County Council will be conducting Public Consultation No.2 Route Corridor Options to help inform this assessment.

Information on the route corridor options and the public consultation is available through a virtual consultation platform on the project website: www.kilbeggantomullingargreenway.ie.

Westmeath County Council want to hear your views on the route corridor options and invite all interested parties to participate in this public consultation. Your feedback is important as it can provide valuable information to the project team as they identify a preferred route corridor for the greenway.

The consultation period opened at 9am on Tuesday May 7. The closing date for submissions is 4pm on Friday May 31 2024.

A public consultation event take place at Bloomfield House Hotel (N91 HP8E) on Thursday May 9, 3-8pm.
