A tree on the road at The Moorings this morning

Storm Darragh left trees down but no major damage across county

Westmeath has been described today as being “in a mess” after last night’s battering by Storm Darragh.

Electricity outages are affecting a large number of areas, and there are trees down in locations all around the county.

Happily, however, there are no reports of anyone being injured or of any serious damage although there have been reported of slates being dislodged from houses.

So intense was the wind that part of a sign from Red Earth blew all the way down past the NCT centre.

Met Éireann had issued severe weather warnings for large parts of the country, and Westmeath was the subject of yellow warnings for both wind and rain with strong advisories against non-essential travel.

The storm got going in earnest late last night and this morning, trees are reported down at The Moorings, near Millie Walsh’s and at Rathowen.

A hazardous situation arose with a tree hanging over Castlepollard Road near Davitt’s Furniture.

ESB crews have been out dealing with a significant level of disruption to power supplies.

Areas including Gainstown, Ballinea, Killucan, and Castlepollard are among the locations that have been affected.

The Bulky Goods Amnesty Day on Saturday 7th December 2024 at Athlone and Mullingar Civic Amenity Sites was postponed due to the severe weather warnings.
