Athboy all set to host the County Fleadh

Athboy is preparing to once again come alive with the sound of traditional Irish music and culture as Comhaltas Tlachtga Athboy hosts Fleadh na Mí. Launching in Ráth Chairn this weekend, this celebration of Irish culture will bring together musicians, singers, dancers, and enthusiasts from all over the county and beyond for a packed programme of events that promises something for everyone.

The festivities kick off on Friday 9th May at 7pm with a lively opening session promised in Ráth Chairn, setting the tone for a week of community spirit and ceol binn. From there, a variety of events will take place throughout Athboy, drawing families, visitors, and locals together to celebrate our rich cultural heritage.

A highlight of the Fleadh calendar will be the Seán-Nós Singing Concert at 8pm on Friday 16th May in the Darnley Lodge Hotel. This promises to be a captivating evening featuring renowned guest singers Paddy Allen, Brian Mc Mahon and Paddy Joyce alongside other special guests and local talent from the Tlachtga branch of Comhaltas, offering an opportunity to experience the heartfelt storytelling of traditional singing.

On Saturday 17th May, from 3pm to 5pm, the streets of Athboy will resonate with music as renowned fiddle player Antóin Mac Gabhann leads street sessions sure to draw crowds and lift spirits.

Another major event not to be missed is the official opening ceremony on 17th May, which will take place after the Fleadh Mass. Taking place at 7pm in St James' Hall, the evening will feature the exceptional talents of Caitlín and Bernadette Nic Gabhann, two of Ireland’s most respected traditional musicians. This promises to be an unforgettable night for all ages with music, chat and refreshments.

Local businesses are also getting into the spirit of the Fleadh with a window display competition, so keep an eye out as Athboy’s streets come alive with vibrant displays celebrating Irish culture.

The week concludes with the heart of the Fleadh - the County Fleadh competitions on Sunday 18th May 18th at O'Growney National School. Talented musicians, singers, and dancers from Comhaltas branches across Meath will compete for a chance to represent the county at the Leinster Fleadh in Drogheda this July. Bhí scoth an cheoil le cloisteáil ag na comórtais a bheidh ar siúl sa scoil náisiúnta in Áth Buí.
