Westmeath goes under pedal power for Bike Week 2025

Schools and communities across Westmeath have several events planned for Bike Week 2025, a celebration of cycling that blends fun, fitness, and safety awareness.

Running till May 18 (plus some activities in June), the week promises a wide variety of events for all ages and abilities, from schoolyard cycling challenges to countryside rides.

From schoolyards to the greenway, Bike Week 2025 offers something for everyone. It’s not just about cycling – it’s about building healthier habits, stronger communities, and safer roads. So grab a helmet, hop on a bike, and join the celebration.

Westmeath Sports Partnership are supporting events this week.

Monday May 12

The Taghmon NS Pedal Power Week encouraged students to cycle to school daily, participate in a ‘bling your bike’ day, and complete pedal-themed homework projects. A local sports coach will help design cycling routes around the school grounds.

At St Hilda’s Special School, the focus is on inclusive cycling fun. Pupils will explore scooters and tricycles while learning about road safety and the wellbeing benefits of active travel.

Presentation Senior School in Mullingar has a full week of events including bike safety checks, road safety talks from local gardaí, treasure hunts, relay races, art activities, and a greenway cycle.

Coralstown NS is promoting safe cycling through the countryside, encouraging students to use the greenway to cycle to friends, clubs, and school.

Columba College in Killucan hosts road safety awareness sessions for its students, a slow bike race and a talk from the Road Safety Authority.

In Ballymore, students at Scoil Eoin Naofa will cycle to the lake and take part in a hands-on workshop with the local Men’s Shed, learning basic bike maintenance skills.

At Dean Kelly NS, students are tackling the Zwift Challenge. Junior classes will complete daily yard laps, while seniors take on virtual cycling challenges via the Zwift app.

St Michael’s NS in Castletown Geoghegan hold a week-long initiative, New to Cycling, blending bike activities with poetry, art, a family cycle on Wellbeing Wednesday, and prize-giving ceremonies.

Dysart NS have a bike safety talk and fun cycling games to promote awareness.

Tuesday May 13

Emper NS invites students and parents on a scenic cycle to Abbeyshrule along the Blueway, following a bike safety talk to kick off the event.

Wednesday May 14

Dalystown NS will be promoting the benefits of cycling alongside key safety lessons for pupils.

TY students from Our Lady’s Bower in Athlone will use the greenway for a round-trip cycle from Athlone to Moate.

Thursday May 15

Gaelscoil an Choillín, Mullingar will host Ag Rothaíocht Lena Chairde (Cycling with Friends), an event uniting students, parents, and the wider community for a safe, scenic group cycle and engaging road safety activities.

That evening, the Lakeside Wheelers Cycling Club invites all ages to join a leisure cycle for all from the Clonmore greenway car park. Cyclists can choose between 10k and 20k routes and enjoy complimentary tea or coffee at the finish.

Friday May 16

The youngest riders will take to the path during the Brosna Bike Race at Child’s Play in Kilbeggan, where preschoolers are encouraged to bike to school and race along the Brosna View Green.

Sunday May 18

Athlone Tri Club host a New to Cycling workshop at the Athlone Regional Sports Centre. The session features skill demonstrations, coaching exercises, and a 10km group cycle on the greenway.

Event in June

Scoil Aodha Naofa in Rahugh will round out Bike Week celebrations on June 6 with an afternoon circuit on the Old Wood Road, promoting bike safety and cycling as a sustainable transport option for families.
