Darkness Into Light participants walking through Mullingar Town Park.

Huge turnout for local Darkness into Light walks

Mullingar’s annual Darkness into Light walk took place last Saturday, May 10, at 4.15am, along with other similar walks held across Westmeath. The walk started at St Loman’s GAA grounds on the Delvin Road and began with a Garda escort to the Dublin Bridge.

The local branch of the Civil Defence assisted the gardaí in ensuring the event ran smoothly and to help out if needed. At Maxol on the Dublin Road, a poster was provided for participants to write messages, while the Mullingar Town Band provided uplifting music for the event.

Along with that, there were positive messages and quotes along the route, including on the digital advertisement board at Mullingar Autos.

The route was through Mullingar Town Park, which was decorated with hundreds of Pieta candles illuminating the pathways and positive posters throughout the park.

The walk then went through the front gates of the park and headed back up the way it came towards St Loman’s, where many participants took the opportunity to take in the sunrise.

More than 70 people got up early for the Darkness Into Light at Streete Parish Park, and they gathered afterwards for breakfast; they had raised some €1700 by the time of the first count of funds on Saturday.

In Ballymore, there was another strong turnout for a walk held “in memory of many, but in particular, Alan McLoughlin”.
