Scoil Naomh Bríde earns DCU Changemaker School status

One of Westmeath’s smallest schools has just won itself a major honour – a prestigious DCU Changemaker School Award.

Scoil Naomh Bríde, Emper, which has just 24 pupils, becomes one of just 47 schools in Ireland to hold this status.

“We feel deeply privileged and proud of what this recognition means for our children, staff, and families,” school principal Fiona Brennan told the Westmeath Examiner.

Fiona went on to explain that the award recognises schools that lead the way in creativity, leadership, teamwork, and empathy – “four values that we hold close in everything we do here”.

“It’s a proud moment for our staff, our families, and most of all, our fantastic children, whose kindness, enthusiasm, and creativity inspire us every day,” said Fiona, stating that while Scoil Naomh Bríde may be small, that is one of its greatest strengths.

“Every child is truly seen, supported, and celebrated. With smaller numbers, we can offer more hands-on learning, more creativity, and more time to explore and grow together.”

In the last year alone, the children have taken part in guitar and ukulele lessons through Music Generation Westmeath; creative art workshops with local artist David; GAA coaching, gymnastics, swimming, and soccer sessions; and outdoor gardening, where they grow their own vegetables and learn about nature.

They also enjoy daily fun in the school’s outdoor play area, a space where friendships blossom and imaginations run free.

“The Changemaker Award is a celebration of the positive, inclusive environment we work hard to create – one where every child can thrive, lead, and make a difference in their own way,” says Fiona, adding that the school is now enrolling for the 2025/2026 school year, and is always happy to welcome new families into its caring and creative community.
