Walks and Waves
Rotary Club Mullingar Young Writer Competition
Winning entry by Carl Keane, St Colmcille's NS, Gainstown
On a cold winter’s morning, I walked along the shoreline,
Slowly as the waves crept in from the sea.
I watched as the sun just burst with sunshine,
And it hit a comforting warmth into me.
Soon, the ocean will escape from tranquility,
Becoming rough, strong, and hazardous,
Using utter force, strength, and agility.
But then, it will turn calm and glamorous.
This is why I enjoy long walks by the water,
With nothing to do but walk on, walk on.
I will walk only to discover and ponder
That I am old and will soon be gone.
