Focus on fun of the run at St Colman's 5k

The annual 5K fun run/walk at St Colman’s NS is “a great chance for the whole school community to come together and just have a nice day out”, said principal Ger Beehan, “and the sunny weather is fabulous.”

This year’s run, on Sunday (May 18) was sponsored by Barry Martin Motors and Westmeath Sports Partnership. The focus is on the activity rather than winning medals.

“It’s a fun run, so the emphasis is on participation as opposed to winning medals – every child who crosses the finish line today will get a night off from their homework to reward their efforts,” Mr Beehan said.

The event has been running for seven years, and this is the first year there was complete emphasis on the fun part.

Participants started at the Mullingar Shamrocks GAA grounds and finished at Ginnell Terrace after a route including the Royal Canal towpath.

Afterwards everyone was welcomed back to the school for tea, snacks and ice-cream. With amazing weather, the day was filled with fun and laughter.
