Speeding in housing estates: 'Is there a way to deal with this?'
The issue of speeding in housing estates in Westmeath was raised by a member of the The Public Participation Network (PPN) at the May meeting of Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad.
The PPN provides a framework for public engagement and participation in local government. The members, comprising nominees from a number of voluntary groups, facilitate participation in local democracy
PPN member, Rosaleen Madden, raised the issue of motorists driving above the speed limit in estates across the county.
“Drivers are speeding around estates, causing problems in estates,” Ms Madden said. “On Saturday I was taking a walk through an estate. There were kiddies out playing and a car came out driving very fast. When I said it to him he just looked at me.”
She continued: “It's extremely dangerous, I am wondering if there is any way we can deal with this.”
District engineer, Patrick Kavanagh, told the meeting the council has earmarked funding for ramps in estates and works will be undertaken in the coming year.
