Decades of VW history on show at Mullingar Autos

Seventy-five years ago, the first Volkswagen Beetle Type 1 assembled outside of Germany rolled off the assembly line on Shelbourne Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin.

The almond green Beetle, later known as the ‘Ballsbridge Beetle,’ became a symbol of Volkswagen’s birth in Ireland.

To commemorate the 75-year milestone, the ‘Ballsbridge Beetle’, which is normally in the Zeithaus museum at Autostadt GmbH, the headquarters of Volkswagen in Wolfsburg, Germany, will be exhibited at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks.

The ‘Ballsbridge Beetle’ is still in its original form, apart from slight modifications such as the addition of indicators. It will be on display on Saturdays June 7, July 5, and August 2. You don’t have to go to Dublin to see a vintage Beetle with history, as the 1956 version belonging to Mullingar Autos is on display in their showroom.
