Calls for development of Westmeath tourism potential
Developing the tourism potential of the east part of the county was identified by elected representatives at a meeting of members of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad.
In a question to the executive of the MD, Cllr David Jones (SF) asked about the prospect of funding for the Old Bog Road walkway in Castlepollard.
In the reply, it was stated that Westmeath County Council applied for funding for a pedestrian crossing leading to the Old Bog Walk under the community recognition fund.
Cllr Jones’s question adds weight to the call for a tourist trail from Rochfortbridge through Milltownpass, Kinnegad, Killucan/Raharney, Delvin, and Castlepollard linking in with Fore and Multyfarnham.
A motion previously proposed for such a trail was roundly supported by members at county council level. It is suggest it act as an integrated attraction promoting the historical, cultural, literary, and natural environment gems that exist throughout the rural parts of Westmeath.
At the May meeting, Cllr Denis Leonard (Lab) spoke about the importance of tourism developing for the east part of the county. He called for “joined up thinking” on the matter: “We need to discuss how we are going to promote tourism,” Cllr Leonard said, “I just want to see a proactive approach to it.”
