Tullamore showcase to honour the tradition of thatched houses

Creative Ireland and Offaly Heritage are hosting a showcase event to honour the tradition of thatched houses.

Taking place in Offaly Historical Society, Bury Quay, Tullamore at 7pm next Monday (June 9), the event will feature three short films including a ‘show and tell’ from Ben and Tony Purcell, and Tony Donoghue and Sean Gleeson.

Harvest Home is a short film documenting the art of thatching, by Padraic Seery, funded by Creative Ireland and Offaly County Council in 2024.

God in a Bottle delves into the tradition of two God in a Bottle makers in Offaly and homes where God in a Bottle takes pride of place. The film was created by Mixed Bag Media, and funded by the Heritage Council and Offaly County Council.

Irish Folk Furniture is a warm and witty film from rural Tipperary which follows the restoration of traditional Irish furniture. Created by Mayfly Films Ltd, the film was the recipient of Best Animation Award at the Sundance Film Festival 2013.

‘Show and Tell’ will feature some of the hand tools used by thatchers Ben and Tony Purcell and will also include a number of small items from Tony Donoghue and Sean Gleeson that one might expect to find in a vernacular/thatched house.

There is no charge for admission, but booking is essential.
