Bridge House to host 'Mooncups for Malawi' music bingo night
The Bridge House on Austin Friars Street will host ‘Mooncups for Malawi’ music bingo night on Friday, June 13 at 8 pm.
Margaret Hannon, Katie Maguire, Mary Giles and Catherine Kerrigan are fundraising for Matandani Primary School in Malawi so that they can help provide Mooncups to women and young girls at the school.
Mooncups are silicone menstrual cups that aim to be sustainable and provide comfort for those in need of them.
Period poverty is a huge issue across the world, especially in developing countries, with women and young girls not being able to afford essential period products.
The women volunteered at the school last year and were inspired to provide support to the locals, after discussing with the women in the area, they found that the vast majority of them would use Mooncups if they were available to them.
Margaret Hannon, one of the fundraiser organisers said, “I cannot even imagine what it's like to have to manage periods every month and not be able to afford basic hygiene.
“My hope is that through this bingo night, we can create awareness and help as many women as we possibly can.Margaret went on to thank their sponsors for the evening: “We have received great support from businesses in Mullingar.
“They have been very supportive and generous, local businesses have provided lovely raffle prizes and Cullen’s Bridge Bar has provided us a space for the evening.
“We also go in touch with Mooncup themselves and they have decided to provide them at a reduced rate for us.”“This is a great opportunity to help those in need, and every 10 euro raised will help one girl or woman in Malawi.”
