Multy dreams big for film fundraiser

The community and sports facilities in Multyfarnham are already top grade, but the people in the area seek continual improvement, and next in their sights is a new astroturf pitch at the GAA grounds.

Fundraising events are being organised, and one of the main ones brought a touch of Hollywood glitz to the village on Saturday evening when the ‘Film Awards’ were launched.

Mark Fallon, who is leading the organising committee for the awards, explained what they are planning. The big night is at the Johnstown Estate in Enfield on November 21, and in the months between now and then, the cast and crews for the various films being made will be busy rehearsing and fundraising.

Mark outlined the recent improvements at Multyfarnham GAA and said the facilities there are not exclusively for the club; they are for the wider community.

“A new pitch was built and opened in the last 12 months, a state-of-the-art pitch that has been used by a number of inter-county teams, including the senior footballers, hurlers and camogie players.”

The pitch has the same dimensions at the Croke Park one, so is particularly useful for senior teams, said Mark.

“In the last few years, there have been a lot of changes at the club. A new ladies club was established, GAA For All was set up, and that supports the needs of kids with intellectual disabilities.

“The whole idea of this fundraising project and plan is to allow everybody in the community to use this area – when the new pitch was built, a walking track around it was included and that is being used by the community too – a running club was set up by a local girl, Emma Harvey. So, it’s not just a GAA project – it’s a community project.”

The organisers of the Film Awards are working with Kevin Rowe Events and have spread the net well beyond Multyfarnham. There are individuals and groups from other areas involved, and some high profile locals including Cllr Alfie Devine, former county councillor Brian Crum, and Multy GAA chairperson, David Kelly.

The Film Awards involve seven movies and almost 100 actors and the announcement of the details was made at the launch in Conor Murtagh’s on Saturday. The movies are The Snapper, The Field, Father Ted, Calendar Girls, Bad Sisters, Forest Gump and Derry Girls.

Mark added: “There are a lot of new people who have moved into the area in the last five, 10 years, and we want to build a space and a facility for everyone to use.

“We’re a small club and we’re a tiny club, but we use the tagline, ‘small club with big dreams’.”
