Camogie President Brian Molloy attends club draws
The Village Barn in Tyrrellspass was the venue for the launch of the 2025 David Smyth Catering Senior Camogie Championship and the Deelside Coaches Junior Camogie Championship.
The fourteen competing clubs in the county found out their opponents for the season at the launch.
The event was attended by Uachtarán Cumann Camógaíochta, Brian Molloy, along with player representatives from each club, Westmeath Executive members, supporters, and club personnel.
This season sees the final use of the senior-junior split for championship with 2026 welcoming the senior-intermediate-junior format with the finishing positions in the coming months determining the fate of every side for the following year.
PRESIDENTIAL VISIT
Westmeath Camogie were honoured and thrilled to have President of the Camogie Association, Brian Molloy, attend the event and lend his support to the work being done in the county. Molloy, with strong links to the Castlepollard and Killucan areas, took part in the photo shoots for the attending player representatives before participating in the live-streamed draw for the group stages of the championship.
SENIOR DRAW
President Brian Molloy was on-hand to undertake the draw alongside Westmeath Camogie PRO, Jason Keelan, and Secretary, Laura Heffernan. The only seedings on the night were in the senior section where Raharney (ten-in-a-row winners) and perennial finalists, Clonkill, were separated.
With the Matrix Cup reaching its’ final year, the girls from Raharney will be keen to ensure the silverware returns back one final time before ushering in a new era of trophies.
Raharney begin their campaign by facing St Brigid’s, who are, themselves, a team with plenty of potential. Castlepollard will also welcome close friends Lough Lene Gaels in Group A’s opening weekend. In Group B, Clonkill will look to get off the mark early but will have to be at their best as they meet Crookedwood in round one. Group B also sees a repeat of the Senior B final of 2024 as St Munnas head to Castletown-Geoghegan hoping to overturn the result from that decider.
JUNIOR DRAW
The Junior section for 2025 sees the teams increase to eight, meaning two groups of four was possible this year. Clonkill and Cullion will meet in the home of the maroon side in Group A while St Oliver Plunkett’s will head out the road to meet Brownstown. Group B has pitted relegated senior side from 2024, Delvin, up against Raharney, who were chasing a double title win last year only for the blues to fall at the last hurdle. Southern Gaels, the newest club in the county and the side who competed in a senior-age final for the first time last year, face the second side of Castletown-Geoghegan.
Details of all games will be released in due course with play to commence around August.
