'Results of post-mortem will determine course of canal drowning investigation'
Gardaí were alerted to the discovery of a body in the Royal Canal, Mullingar, shortly after 6am on Sunday, 8th June 2025.
The deceased male was recovered from the canal by the Fire Service.
His body has been transferred to the morgue, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course. The results of the examination will determine the course of the Garda investigation.
Investigation is ongoing.

The garda investigation following the recovery of a body from the Royal Canal at Mullingar on Sunday morning has been described as “ongoing”.
In a statement to the Westmeath Examiner the Garda Press Office said:
“Gardaí were alerted to the discovery of a body in the Royal Canal, Mullingar, shortly after 6am on Sunday, June 8. The deceased male was recovered from the canal by the Fire Service.
“His body has been transferred to the morgue, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
“The results of the examination will determine the course of the Garda investigation.”
The deceased man was named locally as 55-year-old Peter Dinnegan, and floral tributes have been placed at the side of the canal.
Large numbers of people left comments on the Westmeath Examiner Facebook page to extend their sympathy to the family of Mr Dinnegan.
One said: “Very sad, rest in peace Peter, was only talking to him the other day, thinking of Paddy, and all his family.”
Another wrote: “Rest in peace Peter, God give your parents and family the strength at this sad time. Condolences from an old friend.”
And another said on our Facebook page: “Rest in peace Peter, God give strength to his mother Sally, father Paddy and family at this sad time. Deepest sympathy and condolences to all his family and friends too.”
