Andy on new road after 26 years at wheel
Taxi man, Andy Bolger, familiar face around Mullingar, is driving on a new street, as he retires after 26 years behind the wheel.
Andy is originally comes from Clare, and spent many years in the Netherlands, where he had a business renovating and building houseboats.
He has been a taxi drive in Mullingar since March 1999 and has fond memories of it: “These last few years have been fantastic, Mullingar and its people have been good to me.
“Westmeath people are so easy going, and I’ve become an honorary Westmeath man over the years.
“Although I still wear my Clare jersey, I’ve got my Westmeath jersey on proudly when I’m at the games in Cusack Park.
Asked about some of his memories, Andy said: “One of the things that I still laugh about to this day is when I collected some lads from Bloomfield House Hotel, there was one man left behind as we couldn’t fit him into the taxi, so he decided to climb into the boot.
“I dropped them off at Canton Casey’s, and there was a crowd of people watching this man climb out the boot.”
Andy spoke about his plans and the future for Westmeath Cabs: “I’m 77 now, so it’s time for me to take a step back.
“I’m looking forward to heading out to Australia at the end of the month, I’ve got tickets to the British and Irish Lions tour, and I’ve a daughter and brother living over there.
“I suppose I’ll only know the extent of it when I arrive back, I’ll have to occupy the time where I used to be working.
“I’ll miss the crack when out and about, but I know Westmeath Cabs will be in fine hands from now on, with Lynn and Nicola, as they are young and energetic and they want to push the business on as much as possible.”
