Corpus Christi Procession from Mullingar's Cathedral of Christ the King
An estimated 500 people took part in the Corpus Christi Procession from the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar, following 12.30pm Mass on Sunday.
It is understood the last procession was in 2012, and this year’s was a response to feedback provided in a survey conducted by the Parish Pastoral Council – who have submitted the text that follows here.
The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) would like to express our sincere thanks to all those who made the Corpus Christi Procession on Sunday 22 June such an unbelievable success.
We would like to especially thank An Garda Síochána, Westmeath Civil Defence, Westmeath County Council, Mullingar Town Band, our servers, readers, vendors, and grounds keeping team, who all contributed so enthusiastically in making the procession come to fruition.
As members of the PPC, we are working to promote our parish and the needs of its parishioners on a daily basis. The reinvigoration of the Corpus Christi Procession was as a direct result of the valuable feedback we received from our parishioners in our recent survey.
Along with, and with the support of the priests of the parish, it is our duty to represent and listen to the local parishioners, so we, as a community, can enhance our faith and that of those around us at every opportunity.
Of most importance in our expression of gratitude are the children who joined in the procession, and their families.
It was wonderful to see so many smiling, energetic faces processing with pride in the fact that they have made their First Holy Communion.
This is the essence and future of our faith. All we can do is sow a seed and let The Holy Spirit do the rest. Our sincere thanks go out to all the parents, guardians and families who brought their children to process– without your support, our efforts would be in vain.
We hope to act on other areas of our survey from the parishioners in the coming months and always value any suggestions or feedback.

John Lafferty, RIP
Although our Corpus Christi Procession on Sunday was a success, we were, however, missing one vital link – our late council member and friend John Lafferty.
John passed away on June 3 after a courageous battle. As a cherished member of the Mullingar Parish Pastoral Council, he worked tirelessly to promote faith in the local community. That faith was abundantly evident in John to anyone who ever met him. His belief in Our Lady and The Holy Spirit inspired many and he was in no way shy in expressing his steadfast beliefs.
At PPC meetings, John would say very little, but would sit back and listen to all views. When he did speak, all would take notice as his quiet wisdom would shine forth in a single sentence.
At our Procession on Sunday we all prayed for sunshine but the clouds were closing in at 11am. Luckily we had a direct line in John working for us from above. A few quiet prayers later and the sun shone throughout our procession. John was working as hard as ever, in his own quiet way and through his unshakable spirit.
We would like to express our sincere condolences to John’s wife Moire, his children Cliona, Euan, Roisin and Aisling, his family, friends and nursing colleagues. We were blessed and privileged to have known him and proud to have him as a member of the Mullingar Parish Pastoral Council. May he rest in peace.
Message of thanks
A heartfelt thank you to all the priests, committee members, and volunteers who helped make the Eucharistic procession and family gathering such a joyful and well-organised event. Your dedication, planning, and generous giving of time ensured everything ran so smoothly.
It was truly a beautiful and positive experience for the parish and wider community. The children had a fantastic day, and it was uplifting to see so many families enjoying the occasion together. A special thanks as well for the lovely treats – the ice creams and coffees were a real hit – and we’re grateful that the weather played its part too.
Thank you all once again for your hard work and your warm, welcoming spirit. Days like this remind us what a gift our community is.
