Mullingar Scratch Trophy remains a special golfing event
The Mullingar Scratch Trophy has had many high profile past champions such as Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley, Darren Clarke, Shane Lowry and recent grand slam hero, Rory Mcllroy. This year's event, which takes place at the scenic Mullingar Golf Club on Sunday August 3 and Monday August 4 will attract plenty of golfing talent.
The Mullingar Scratch Trophy is unique in the Irish Amateur golfing calendar in that it maintains the 72 hole stroke play format, making it a strong test of skill, resilience and endurance.

The event has had many high profile past champions such as Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley, Darren Clarke, Shane Lowry and recent grand slam winner, Rory Mcllroy. It is interesting to note that all of Ireland’s recent major winners have also had their hands on the Scratch Trophy, making it a worthy stepping stone.
The Mullingar Scratch Trophy is a highlight in the golfing calendar, attracting top amateur golfers from across the country. Over the years a large number of home players have participated in the competition, but without success. Some, however, boxed above their weight against the top guys on more than one occasion. Jim Murray and Tom Shaw featured prominently in the early years with Tom joint leader with Billy Hulme in 1964 after day one. Peter Wallace, Ted Eighan and, more recently, Des Morgan led their illustrious fields, the latter finishing runner-upon two occasions. Junior Morris finished third on a couple of occasions and Joe Purcell had a ding- dong battle in 1973 with the eventual winner, Mark Gannon.
This year's tournament was launched on Monday July 7 at the Mullingar Golf Club.
