Kittens find a home after being discovered in car engine bay

Two young kittens discovered abandoned in a wooded area near Delvin and in a car engine bay have now found new homes.

A Delvin resident said that on Thursday July 3: “We found a kitten in our car engine bay, the poor little thing was freezing and starving.”

The kitten was believed to be around nine weeks old and was extremely distressed well found.

That resident said another kitten turned up at a neighbour’s house, and they suspect someone abandoned them in the forest.

The family searched the surrounding area and field but were unable to locate any more kittens.

The ones found were tame, suggesting they had previously been house pets before being dumped.

The kittens were taken to The Kitten Cottage Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit animal sanctuary near Virginia, County Cavan.

Maire Egan of Kitten Cottage said: “At only nine weeks old, these kittens would never have survived on their own. They’re simply too young to fend for themselves.”

Kitten Cottage is fundraising for ongoing care of the kittens and cats.

A spokesperson said: “Please, get your cats neutered, and if you can help us to raise funds to help these poor things, please do. Our vet bill has reached over €10,000 this year. We need people’s help – we can’t do it all.”

Kittens are usually born between April and September in what is known as kitten season, and as a result, many are abandoned at this time.

People are asked to check their cars before driving, and others small warm spaces where kittens could hide.

If you find an abandoned kitten and if you are unable to care for it, contact local animal shelters or rescues; many have foster programmes and can provide veterinary guidance and health checks.

The kittens found in Delvin were adopted together on Monday July 7 last and are settling in to a new home.
