From apple tarts to live music, Oldcastle Show has it all
Mark your calendars and round up the family, the legendary Oldcastle Agricultural Show is back in Gilson Park this Sunday, July 20.
It’s promising more fun, food, and festivities than ever before. Now in its 84th year, this beloved event has become a summer staple, bringing together locals and visitors alike for a day packed with tradition, talent, and good old-fashioned craic.
From prize cattle and ponies to creative crafts and canine capers, there’s something to entertain every age and interest. This year, the show boasts over 400 competition classes, generous prize money, and a jam-packed lineup of events that’ll keep the whole crew buzzing all day.
One of the biggest talking points? The brand-new All-Ireland Apple Tart Eating Competition. Thanks to the folks at Manorhill Bakery, contestants will chow down in a fast-paced (and probably hilarious) battle to see who can polish off the most pastry in record time. With a whopping €1,000 up for grabs, this is one event you’ll definitely want to enter, or at least cheer on from the sidelines.
But that’s just the beginning. Animal lovers and farmers will be spoiled for choice, with impressive entries expected across the Cattle, Sheep, Horse, Poultry, and Home Industry sections.
The cattle rings will showcase everything from pedigree Limousins to the ever-popular Young Stockperson classes, where the next generation of farmers show off their skills. Over in the Sheep Section, don’t miss the high-speed shearing competitions, a true spectator sport!
Horse fans will be delighted with one of Ireland’s largest equine show rings, featuring everything from Connemara ponies to the charming Family Riding Pony Ring, where young riders take centre stage.
Looking for more action? Watch feathers fly in the Greatest Cockerel of Oldcastle contest, or take a stroll through the Automobile Section, where vintage tractors and threshers tell the story of farming’s past.
Inside the buzzing Show Hall, creativity reigns supreme with everything from jam and turf displays to art, photography, and even handwriting competitions. Meanwhile, outside, furry friends strut their stuff in the hugely popular Dog Show, open to every breed and blend.
For the kids (and kids at heart), there’s a pet farm, puppet shows, face painting, races, and obstacle courses, all totally free. Hungry? The Food and Craft Village has you covered with delicious local bites and handmade goodies.
And the fun doesn’t stop there. This year sees the debut of the Music Marquee, where the amazing Mad Ass Mules — Ireland’s biggest wedding band — will get the crowd on their feet. Don’t miss the Jiving Competition or the epic Tug O’ War if you're feeling brave!
So whether you’re a farming fan, a foodie, a music lover, or just after a great day out — the Oldcastle Show has it all.
