1428 Active Retirement Club host bric-a-brac fundraiser

Westmeath’s only active retirement club hosted a Bric-a-Brac sale on the morning of July 18, selling everything from ornaments, books, electrical goods and knitting wool.

The event was hosted at their base on 2 Harbour Street in Mullingar, beginning at 10:30 am, and attracted many people to take a look around.

The 1428 Club runs fundraisers throughout the year, as they are fully self-sufficient, not receiving any operational funding.

Debbie Daly, Manager of the 1428 Active Retirement Club, said: “We had a room upstairs filled with donations from members of the public, and we just said we would host a bric-a-brac to get it sold.

“We don't receive any operational funding, so we have to account for every penny so that we can provide a service for older people.

“We managed to purchase this building from years of fundraising, so we are incredibly lucky in that regard, because people are so generous.”

Debbie continued: “Everything comes down to money, as we love going on days out and doing activities with the group, and that's why days like this are so important for us.

“At the moment, we run a raffle where members buy a ticket for a fiver and whoever wins gets a week's worth of shopping.

“At the end of the day, we like to look after each other, and this is like one big happy family.”
