Successful Edenderry funding bid inspires local pool group

The most recent meeting of the Mullingar Pool Action Group (MPAG) heard from Cllr Noel Cribbin, Offaly County Council, who gave details of a successful funding application for a pool in Edenderry.

At the meeting in the Greville Arms Hotel, Cllr Cribbin said in November 2024 it was announced that the Edenderry Swimming Pool project had received an allocation of €8.9 million as part of the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF). That was one of the largest funding allocations in the country.

The pool in Edenderry had been destroyed by fire in January 2024.

Cllr Cribbin spoke about the process behind the successful bid for funding.

The Mullingar Regional Sports complex received a €2 million allocation from the LSSIF in November 2024. Those funds will go towards getting the sports complex shovel-ready.

Significant further funding is imperative for the construction phase of the project, said a spokesperson for the MPAG.

It is anticipated that Westmeath County Council will finalise the preliminary design process and commence the Part 8 planning process for the Mullingar regional sports centre in the coming months.

MPAG chairperson Lisa Corcoran said: “It was interesting to get an outline from Cllr Cribbin on the process behind the successful Edenderry swimming pool bid for funding under the LSSIF. While it was fantastic to secure a €2 million allocation under the LSSIF for the Mullingar Regional Sport Complex last November, the project will need much more substantial funding as it progresses.

“MPAG welcome news from WCC that the planning process will be initiated this week, as having planning secured will strengthen any funding applications for the project.

“The progress by WCC on the development of the new swimming pool has been significant over the last few years, so we are really hopeful as the Mullingar pool Action Group that this momentum will continue.”
