‘Boxer’ announces free admission for U18s to OPW heritage sites in August
Minister of State for the Office of Public Works, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, TD, has announced that all visitors under the age of 18 will enjoy free admission to OPW heritage sites throughout August 2025.
The new pilot initiative aims to encourage families and young people to engage with Ireland’s heritage over the summer in a budget-friendly and accessible way.
In the midlands, OPW heritage sites include:
Fore Abbey (free all year round) – an impressive monastic site in a charming north Westmeath village
Hill of Uisneach (free all year round) – one of Ireland’s most sacred and historic sites, often referred to as the spiritual centre of the country
Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre (eligible for free U18 scheme in August) – home to Europe’s largest known prehistoric wooden road, near Kenagh,
Clonmacnoise (eligible for free U18 scheme in August) – the iconic early Christian monastic site on the banks of the River Shannon in Offaly.
“I’m proud to launch this new pilot scheme, which will give young people across the midlands and the rest of Ireland a chance to explore our heritage for free this August,” said Minister Moran.
“Whether it’s a day out at Fore Abbey, Clonmacnoise, or the Corlea Trackway, these are places that bring history to life. They also offer families a low-cost way to enjoy quality time together during the summer break.”
The free U18 scheme applies to all fee-paying OPW heritage sites, with the exception of Kilmainham Gaol and Brú na Bóinne, and runs from August 1 to August 31. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Minister Moran also acknowledged the support of his independent colleagues working in government, who have helped deliver initiatives that directly support communities and families.
