ICA members enjoy day at Birr Castle before summer break

Westmeath ICA Federation notes

The Mullingar Guild hosted the Westmeath ICA Federation’s last meeting of the season on Tuesday 1 July, and members from four guilds were in attendance.

The brown bread competition was won by Helen O’Gorman, who went on to represent the county at An Grianán. Thanks to Bernie Mulligan, who judged the competition. Unfortunately luck was not with Helen at An Grianán, and the winners of the competition were Kathy Bolger of Bree Guild, Wexford Federation ICA, Maureen Igoe, Bonniconlon Guild, Mayo ICA Federation, and Helen Walker, Swords Guild, Dublin Federation ICA.

The three ICA finalists progress to the National Ploughing Championships, to try for the grand prize of €5,000 and a new NEFF oven courtesy of Euronics Ireland.

Members who entered the Federation Brown Bread competition with judge Bernie Mulligan, Catherine Leavy, Helen O’Gorman, winner, Bernie Mulligan, judge, Liz Gavigan, second, Eilish McDonnell and Liz Brady.

Federation members held a walk for ACWW in Tyrrellspass on July 5, unfortunately, a date that did not suit many members, but those who did attend enjoyed the lovely Cloncrow Bog and Village Trail Walk. We enjoyed scones and coffee/tea in Tyrrellspass Castle afterwards.

On July 24, 20 members enjoyed a day trip to Birr Castle and gardens. They had a guided tour of the castle and enjoyed walks through the garden and museum. They finished the day with a meal in the Birr County Arms.

Wishing all our members a happy and healthy rest of the summer summer and we will meet again in the autumn.
