Dog poop 'remains a problem on walking routes'

There is a specific type of dog poop bin in use in Dublin, and Cllr Ken Glynn wants similar bins put in place along the popular walking routes in and around Mullingar.

Pressing for action on his motion calling on the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad to roll out dog waste bins along routes that are popular with people walking dogs, Cllr Glynn said that on the greenway, one will often see dog poop bags thrown to one side, because people got tired carrying them.

Locations where he believed poop bins are needed are west Mullingar, the Joe Dolan Bridge, the C-Link Road, Auburn and Newlands; Robinstown, Lakepoint.

He stressed he was not looking for big public bins – just ones large enough for a poop bag.

The written response from the executive to Cllr Glynn’s motion stated that dog waste bins have been installed along the greenway and additional bins will be also provided along popular routes in the town.

Support came from Cllr Bill Collentine.

District engineer Pat Kavanagh said some bins have been put in place at the Green Bridge, Harbour Bridge, Dublin Bridge and Saunder’s Bridge – “basically where the access points are off the canal”.

Mr Kavanagh said he had looked at a number of other areas, but the issue was that all these bins would have to be serviced: “You have to have the people go around and collect these every day.

“So you have to obviously look at the resources,” he said, before assuring Cllr Glynn that despite that restriction, he would look at other areas.
