Unforgettable Mullingar experience for Boyle Palestine Solidarity walkers

The Boyle Palestine Solidarity Group completed the final portion of their eight-day walk across the National Famine Way on Saturday, August 9, arriving at the Famine Memorial in Dublin around 7 pm.

The group surely won't forget their journey through Mullingar, as the Longford-Westmeath Palestine Solidarity Campaign displayed a massive crochet blanket as they passed through.

The group displayed a massive granny square blanket, with each square representing ten children who have died in Palestine.

The blanket was displayed over the Carey Bridge, and was so big that it stretched the entire length of the bridge.

Fiona Keenan, a participant in the walk, spoke of their journey through Mullingar, saying: “We probably had the most people meeting us in Mullingar, and we were just so delighted with the support we got there.

“We were coming along the canal and looked up at the bridge and saw everybody encouraging us and waving flags, and then all of a sudden it stopped and they lifted this blanket, and it must have been 100 metres long.”

Fiona concluded: “It was so moving and we are so thankful to the Longford-Westmeath Solidarity Group for their support.

“We feel that we achieved our aim of honouring shared histories and raising awareness, through compassion, and to show that we care.”
