Some Ones Son’s from Mullingar playing in front of a large crowd at the Gig Rig on Friday night.

Midlands acts rock the Gig Rig at Fleadh Cheoil

The Gig Rig is a central attraction of the Fleadh Cheoil and home to the best free entertainment throughout the week-long festival. This year the stage once again featured a stellar line-up, including well-known names like the Blackwater Céilí Band, Beoga, The Rising, and the Piper’s Cross Céilí Band.

It was, however, the performances by Westmeath’s own musicians that captured great attention from the Wexford crowds.

Mullingar folk group Some One’s Sons brought their trademark energy to the Friday night headline slot, entertaining a large audience with well-loved ballads.

Leona McKenna, who had coordinated activities for the Gig Rig during the Fleadh Cheoil in Mullingar in 2023, returned to the stage with her musical friends on Saturday evening, delivering a lively set of traditional tunes.

The group featured a great line-up of Westmeath musicians including some of the prizewinners at the weekend.

Also proudly representing Westmeath was the Wrafter Family Band, who performed on Friday evening on the main Gig Rig stage and then again on the second Gig Rig on Saturday evening.

With the recent release of their debut original track and a busy schedule of gigs around Wexford, it was a memorable weekend for the multi-talented family.
