Traditional Field Day back as fundraiser for The Snapper
The popular Multyfarnham Field Day is back this year promising the customary large selection of family fun activities, on Sunday August 31 at Gaine Park.
Multyfarnham Field Day dates back decades and is unique in that it provides lots of simple pleasures from a bygone age – Aunt Sally, Spin the Wheel, bottle stall, mouse racing, nerve test, tug-o-war, wet sponge, rings…
There will be lots of stalls as well as face painting, fancy dress, turf stacking and the popular dog show, and a barbecue and cake sale for anyone feeling peckish on the day.
This year’s event is being organised by the cast of The Snapper, one of seven movies being produced to raise funds for an astroturf pitch at Multyfarnham GAA grounds.
Catherine Maher is one of the organisers and she has been attending the Field Day since she was a child. “I remember winning a bottle of stout at it and giving it to my granddad – I was so proud,” Catherine said.
She plays the mother in The Snapper and is one of a cast of 14.
“The good thing about these things is that they generate fun and events around the area,” Catherine said, adding, “when you have lots of volunteers you can do it.”
Anita Jackson, also one of the organisers, also made the point that the awards night is a community effort, not just a GAA effort.
The new pitch and community centre in Multyfarnham will be the hub of activities in the community and available to all sports, societies, clubs, including GAA4All – GAA for children with special needs, something that is particularly important to the community.
