Garrycastle delegate Michael Mannion asked for 'costings' on the planned Westmeath GAA Centre of Excellence.

No costs available on planned Centre of Excellence

Westmeath GAA County Committee meeting

There is a team working diligently on getting the new Westmeath GAA Centre of Excellence ready for planning permission, but there are no costings available for any of the work, it has been confirmed.

The issue was raised by Garrycastle delegate Michael Mannion at the County Committee meeting on Tuesday, August 12, in Bloomfield House Hotel. Chairman Frank Mescall explained that work on the planned project in Mullingar will be carried out on a phased basis.

“There is a team involved and they have been working on it for three months. As you will appreciate, it’s a huge project. We need to get most of it right before it goes in for planning permission. It involves many disciplines such as lighting, the impact on the ecology, everything. There’s a huge team involved and they are working diligently on it,” he said.

Mr Mannion also queried the cost of the access road to be built. He asked if the land has been reviewed to see what the overall cost of drainage will be.

Mr Mescall explained that the land was surveyed approximately two years ago, but there are no costings available.

“We have soil testing all done; numerous holes throughout the site have been dug and the soil is suitable. All of that is done. The roadway - we haven’t done a costing on that yet because that will come when we get planning permission. We have costings on nothing,” he said.

“It’s very hard to have costings when you don’t know what type of building you are building. And we will have to phase it.”

Win a Home draw raises profit of over €480,000

A total of €482,191 was raised in the Westmeath GAA Win a Home In Spain Draw. Chairman Frank Mescall informed clubs of the profit details at Tuesday’s meeting.

The main prize, an apartment in Murcia, Spain, plus €50,000, was won by John Moore, New York.

Milltownpass delegate Shane Donoghue congratulated the committee on the draw and asked if there will be a formal presentation of all prizes.

“There will be; the people who won it, it’s awkward, the fact that they are in America. They had intended going to the apartment in Spain at the end of July, but that didn’t materialise. Maybe we can do something promotional on it when they visit," replied the chairman.
