ESB to safeguard Westmeath power supply with tree and vegetation clearance
ESB Networks has confirmed that tree and vegetation clearance works will be carried out in Westmeath over the coming months as part of efforts to strengthen the local electricity network in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn.
The storm caused significant disruption across the midlands earlier this year, and ESB Networks says it is now prioritising areas where forestry, timber and vegetation pose the highest risk to power lines and infrastructure.
Surveying and clearance operations will take place on both public and private lands, with ESB Networks and its delivery partners working directly with landowners in Westmeath to safely remove trees and vegetation identified as potential hazards.
Karen McGeough, Storm Review Manager with ESB Networks, said patrols of the network, carried out by drone and on foot, had highlighted several sites across the county where action was needed.
“Trees and vegetation that are too close to overhead lines can cause major outages during extreme weather events,” she explained. “By working with local landowners in Westmeath, we aim to remove these risks in advance. This will help protect public safety and reduce the likelihood of future storm-related power cuts.”
The works form part of a wider programme covering counties including Cavan, Longford, Roscommon and Westmeath. ESB Networks has stressed that the measures are particularly important to ensuring a more reliable electricity supply for local customers
