Motorists frustrated by trialled Mullingar traffic system
The light cycle of a traffic management system in place in Mullingar town has come in from criticism from motorists.
Westmeath County Council are trialling a new system at the junction next to McDonald’s in Mullingar town centre.
Traffic lights from Church Avenue and vehicles exiting there can only turn left. There are bollards on Pearse Street, preventing cars from turning right into Church Avenue.
Motorist Liz Gaughan contacted the Examiner to vent her frustration at the new traffic arrangements: “I was trying to get down he town and there were only two cars get out when the lights went green at Hughes' Corner. It only took five seconds for the lights to go from green to red.”
Liz, who is from Dysert, said the arrangement is causing significant traffic disruption: “It's affecting all motorists. When I was there there were tailback the whole way up to Dominick's Street. I really affects the people trying to get through the town. I'm not in town very often, but this was a great inconvenience.”
