Fifth Irish boxing title and European spot for Mullingar’s Ronan Charles
Mullingar Elite Boxing Club’s Ronan Charles picked up his fifth Irish title on Friday night with an impressive performance in the National Stadium, Dublin.
Ronan had three fights to claim the title: first up was Paul Casey from Portlaoise, a tall, rangy south paw, who is a very talented boxer. Ronan did everything perfect in this fight, throwing solid combinations and using his speedy footwork to make it difficult for his opponent.
Ronan’s next fight was against Tommy McDonagh from Olympic BC, Galway. McDonagh was fairly confident of causing an upset, but Ronan was too strong and too fast, went straight at McDonagh and did not stop for the three rounds. Ronan impressed a lot of people with this performance. Next was the final against Cameron Moran from St Michael’s BC, Athy. Moran, a current Irish champ at the weight above, dropped down and had a fairly big height advantage on Ronan, but this did not faze the Mullingar boxer. Ronan boxed out of his skin and won every round against Moran.
After three brilliant rounds, Ronan's hand was raised and he claimed his 5th Irish national title, a fairly impressive feat seeing as he is only a boy 3. This was Ronan's 45th win out of 46 fights and earns him a place on the Irish national team going to the European championships in October.
