New school journey begins with free library gift for kids

Libraries are always associated with the gift of reading, and this September in Westmeath, the libraries’ gift takes on a physical form that includes a bag and a selection of books.

Launched last week by Cllr Aoife Davitt, cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, and Paula Leavy McCarthy, county librarian, the free ‘My Little Library’ bag is intended to support children entering primary school for the first time.

Each My Little Library Bag includes a selection of books chosen to help children understand and prepare for starting school; a parents’ guide with tips for supporting children through the transition; a special wallet for keeping their free library cards in and information on the many services and activities available for families. Bags are available in English or Irish.

Library membership is free, and families are invited to join and explore everything their local library has to offer — from books and storytime sessions to colouring, games, and friendly faces.

Ms Leavy McCarthy said: “The books and resources in the My Little Library bag introduce children to the wonderful world of reading and imagination and pave the way for a life-long relationship with their local library.”

Cllr Davitt said starting school can be exciting and a little scary. “Children may feel unsure about leaving home, meeting new people, or learning new routines,” she said, adding that the My Little Library Bag helps open up those conversations through gentle, encouraging stories, while also making the library a familiar and fun place they can enjoy all year round.

No registration or appointment is needed: visit a Westmeath Library branch to collect your child’s free Little Library Bag and sign up for free membership if you’re not already a member.
