Connaughton and Core ensure Raharney victory over the Gaels

Westemath Camogie Round-up

Round 4 of the David Smyth Catering Senior and the Deelside Coaches Junior Championships took place on Sunday August 31st. It was a short fixture list with just two Senior Group 1 games down for decision. There were no games in Senior Group 2 or either Junior group. Raharney, still on maximum points in their quest for 11 titles in succession, and Lough Lene Gaels, semi-finalists last year, met in Joristown. A total of 1-7 from the championship top-scorer, Roisín Connaughton, a goal from Hannah Core, six from Amelia Shaw, and one each from Ellen Shaw and Erin Core gave the blues a comfortable 2-15 to 0-4 win.

In the other, it was St Brigid’s and Drumraney. Incredibly, four of the five sides in the group were locked on two points each going into this one, so it was a chance for one side to make a small gain. This game did not disappoint as a feisty battle in the wind came down to the wire with Chloe Butler hitting 1-1 for the girls in green to take the narrowest of wins, 2-8 to 1-10. St Brigid’s, donning the county jerseys in honour of Sheila Lyster, had taken a half-time lead as Jenny Judge, Amy Cully, and Lisa Cully led the Dalystown team forward. A goal from Rhona Cuffe got Drumraney going in the second half and although six yellow cards were issued as the game reached boiling point, Drumraney held out for a big win.

Round 5 takes place the weekend of September 7th. This is the final round of group games.

CHAMPIONSHIP – MINOR

Round 3 of the Patterson Pump Ireland Ltd Westmeath Camogie Club Championship took place last Wednesday 27th August with some excellent games played out in lovely conditions. There were some good battles with the likes of St Plunkett’s/St Brigid’s, Raharney, Lough Lene Gaels, and Brownstown/Cullion coming out on top of their contests. Good luck to all sides taking part in the next round. See fixtures below. Round 4 throws-in this coming Wednesday 3rd September.
