Mullingar RFC girls bound for Women's Rugby World Cup

Mullingar Rugby Club is set for an unforgettable weekend as 70 of its U16 and U18 female players, along with almost 40 coaches, parents, and family members, travel to Brighton to cheer on Ireland in the Women’s Rugby World Cup. The highly anticipated clash against New Zealand takes place on Sunday, September 7, and promises to be a thrilling encounter for all involved.

The trip is about more than just watching world-class rugby. Over the weekend, the Mullingar girls will test their own skills in challenge matches against two of England’s prestigious clubs - Bracknell RFC and London Irish RFC - on Friday, September 5, and Saturday, September 6. These fixtures will provide invaluable experience and an opportunity to showcase the talent within the Mullingar ranks.

In addition to the rugby action, the itinerary includes free time for the group to enjoy some iconic sights, with visits planned to Windsor and Brighton Pier. It’s set to be a perfect balance of competition, team bonding, and cultural experience.

On Sunday, August 31, the players were presented with specially designed gear to mark the occasion, including vest tops, hoodies, and kit bags, ensuring they travel in true Mullingar style.

The club’s commitment to women’s rugby has never been stronger. Mullingar now accounts for an impressive 10% of all registered female players in Leinster.

This summer alone, eight players from the club proudly represented Leinster at provincial level, with many younger players also involved in the Midlands development pathway.

Ray Murphy, head coach of the U16 team, was instrumental in organising the trip. He shared his excitement, saying:

“These girls give their all on the pitch for Mullingar RFC and so many of them have the potential to go on to play at Leinster and indeed at international level. It’s important that we continue to support and encourage these young ladies as they continue their rugby journey in Mullingar.”

Club President Ciaran Murtagh echoed this sentiment, stating:

“Girls’ rugby has never been stronger in Mullingar. The commitment and passion these players show is incredible, and this trip is a testament to the club’s dedication to providing opportunities for our young athletes.”

Join the Mullingar RFC girls as they cheer on the Irish team in Brighton, because the future of Irish women’s rugby is right here in Mullingar.
