Westmeath duo on LGFA intermediate team of the year

Westmeath players Sarah Dillon and Fiona Coyle have both been named in the TG4 LGFA All-Ireland Intermediate Team of the Championship.

Ace forward Dillon (Milltown) and this year's team captain Coyle (St Mary's, Rochfortbridge) have been rewarded for their displays during the 2025 championship, which saw Westmeath lose out in unlucky fashion to eventual champions Tyrone at the semi-final stage.

A former student of TUS Midlands in Athlone, Dillon has battled back from serious injury problems to become one of the leading forwards in the game, while dedicated defender Coyle has given lengthy service to the Westmeath jersey. Coyle lifted the Leinster LGFA Intermediate Championship trophy after Westmeath's victory in the final last May.

Both players were part of the Westmeath team which won the county's last All-Ireland intermediate title in 2021, and Dillon was chosen as the LGFA Player of the Month for May of this year. Sarah's sisters Tracey and Rachel have also represented Westmeath at all levels.

Tyrone were crowned TG4 All-Ireland intermediate champions in early August with victory in the final over Laois, and seven players from the champions have been selected on the Team of the Championship.

Runners-up Laois (whom Westmeath defeated in the Leinster intermediate final) have four players named on the Team of the Championship.

Fermanagh and Wexford have also been acknowledged by the LGFA’s All-Star committee with one player each on the team (see team list below).

Junior champions Louth have seven players selected on the Junior Team of the Championship.

The winners at intermediate and junior level will receive their awards at a Croke Park function on Friday, October 24.

Ladies Gaelic Football Association President Trina Murray said: “The 2025 TG4 All-Ireland Junior and Intermediate Championships provided brilliant football and entertainment.

“The Championships concluded with our finals at Croke Park on Sunday August 3, where the honours went to Louth in the Junior grade, and Tyrone at Intermediate level. These were particularly sweet wins for both counties, who lost out in the 2024 finals but returned 12 months later to claim silverware. Tyrone will return to the Senior Championship ranks for 2025, while Louth will operate in the Intermediate grade.

“Well done to both of our champions, and I also wish to acknowledge the outstanding efforts and contributions or all teams who competed in the 2025 Championships," added the Moate woman, who also thanked TG4 for "their continued and outstanding commitment" to the sport.
