Patsy Joyce, Olympic Boxing Club, Mullingar, is assured of a Bronze Medal at the World Championships in Liverpool on Saturday.

Mullingar boxer wins Bronze medal at World Championships

Patsy Joyce, a star of the Olympic Boxing Club, Mullingar, is assued of a Bronze Medal at World Boxing Championships in Liverpool tomorrow afternoon.

The talented boxer won through to the quarter-finals with an impressive performance in his last 16 bout against Paris Olympics bronze medalist, Bulgaria's Javier Ibanez Diaz. Patsy had won the first round 4-1, and forced a standing count of his opponent in the second. A point was also deducted.

The contest was ended by injury in the second round, and the 3-2 decision was accorded to the Irish man. He was earlier a 3-2 winner over Uzbekistan's Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov.

"Kyle Walker, an Iris boxer, beat him in the 2020 Olympics and now I'm the second Irish fighter to do so. I came here as the underdog; age is only a number. I'm 19 and the youngest member of the team, but I'm competing really well and in good form," he said.

Patsy will box for a medal tomorrow and he is bidding to add to the World Championship medal won by John Donoghue for the club last year.

The 19-year-old will face Spaion's Rafael Serrano in the quarter-final.
