Drivers think the light stays on red too long at the Green Bridge; the council says the lights change in response to traffic demand.

‘Green Bridge light changes too quickly’

Concerns have been raised about the timing of the traffic lights at Green Bridge in Mullingar, and residents of the Clonmore area report that the green phase is so short that only one or two cars can exit.

At the September meeting of Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District, Cllr Ken Glynn said locals had contacted him to complain that "the lights are literally going green for two to five seconds". He asked that the system be checked as a matter of urgency.

District engineer Pat Kavanagh explained that all of the Mullingar traffic lights had been reviewed by specialist contractors and operate on an adaptive basis.

"They don’t let the same amount of traffic out each time," he said. "If there is a backlog on one road, the system may allow more time there and then work its way around."

Mr Kavanagh said he was not aware of any issue at Green Bridge but undertook to have the lights checked.
