Crowds cheering on their boxers at the launch night.

Green and blue don the gloves and go to battle in the ring

The rivalry between the green and the blue took on a new dimension when the teams from Milltown GAA and Shandonagh GAA were unveiled and faced off at the launch of their Fight Night.

The room in the Bloomfield House Hotel split up according to the colours, and that looked like a sign of things to come, in November.

MC Phil Baker landed a few good questions and helped the boxers loosen up before they headed for their training camp the following week.

The Miltown and Shandonagh GAA white-collar boxing match is at Mullingar Equestrian Centre on Saturday November 15 and the big night will feature 15 fighters from each club in what is being lined up as a fun night to raise funds for both sides.

Miltown GAA are working on the development of an astroturf, and Shandonagh GAA are planning to add a gym to recent developments at their grounds.

Along with the boxing matches, there will be a trad session and an after-party featuring Rualie Buaile, a food stall and bar.

Niall McGauran from Milltown GAA explaned: “This event is like nothing that’s been done before in Westmeath. The boxing is only an element of the night.

“Our boxers have been revealed and are now in an intense six-week training camp to be shown the ropes, and we are asking everyone to get behind them by donating online.”

Sean Reilly of Shandonagh added: “We’re also asking sponsors to come on board – they can place ads in our event program,me sponsor a fighter, or become our main event sponsor.

“We will hopefully gain maximum exposure on all pre-event marketing and social media content, which will be beamed around the arena on the night.”

Tickets are available from Miltown and Shandonagh GAA Clubs. For donation links and sponsorship details, see the Battle of Westmeath Fightnight fundraiser on social media.
