Chamber praised as council urged to raise funding
Mullingar Chamber has highlighted a packed programme of events, initiatives and lobbying efforts over the last year, and members of Westmeath County Council have praised its work and called for its funding allocation to be increased.
At a presentation to Westmeath County Council’s Economic Development, Enterprise, Agriculture and Tourism SPC, chamber president James Burke outlined the role the volunteer-led body plays in promoting the town as a place to live, work and do business.
With more than 240 members, it is the largest business organisation in the county.
“Our mission is to champion local business and promote Mullingar.
“We’ve had a busy 12 months, from the Midlands Career Expo and our business awards to lobbying on behalf of members and supporting projects such as the St Patrick’s Day parade,” said Mr Burke.
He also pointed to ongoing collaboration with Westmeath County Council, the Local Enterprise Office and Chambers Ireland, as well as initiatives such as Mullingar.ie and the Purple Flag programme to promote the town’s night-time economy.
The chamber received €30,000 in council funding this year, something Mr Burke said was vital in supporting its work.
“We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without that funding, and we believe we deliver huge value in return.”
Councillors were unanimous in their praise for the organisation, and chairman Cllr Aengus O’Rourke suggested that the current funding allocation should be revisited.
“The €30,000 was a concept to support the chambers, but you’ve proven that it delivers far beyond what might be expected. We need to provide you with growth opportunities and look at enhancing that support,” he said.
Cllr John Dolan agreed that the council gets “value from the contribution” it makes, while Cllr Bill Collentine said additional funding would “benefit the entire town”.
Cllr Emily Wallace said the work of the chambers could not be underestimated, noting the importance of attracting footfall: “The more people we can get to stop, spend and support businesses in Mullingar, the more the town and surrounding areas will thrive.”
She also welcomed news of the planned music trail as a way of further boosting tourism and business activity.
Cllr O’Rourke concluded by suggesting that Mullingar and Athlone Chambers jointly prepare a proposal for increased funding to bring back to the council.
