WAHS holding workshops on 'Doing Local Studies'
Westmeath Archaeological and Historical Society will be holding two workshops on Doing Local Studies in the Greville Arms Hotel on Saturday 4 October and Saturday 11 October.
The focus will be on the skill set needed to write the history of your local area and a wide set of topics will be examined including genealogy, sport, archaeology, writing skills and famine studies.
The first Workshop on Saturday 4th commences at 9.30am with inputs from two experienced genealogists who will explore the approaches to compiling family histories.
Gretta Connell has written the best selling book on this theme, Tracing your Westmeath Ancestors. Dr Janice Mann is a working genealogist and will share the skills she deploys on a daily basis.
Dr Tom Hunt has written the best known book on sport in Westmeath, Sport and Society in Victorian Ireland – The Case of Westmeath. He will facilitate a session on how to approach writing the history of local sports clubs.
The workshop on 11 October commences at 9am and will focus on Famine Studies by Seamus O’Brien and writing skills with Paul Gosling.
These are free workshops supported by Creative Ireland and Westmeath County Council.
