Mullingar Ukulele Group looking for new members

Mullingar Ukulele Group provided the lively musical entertainment during the launch of Our Vision Our Voice in the Atrium last Thursday evening.

Frank Byrne, tutor, was leading the session, and afterwards, he told the Westmeath Examiner about the group and that said they are planning to start new beginner lessons soon.

“We’ve been together for four years and we rehearse every Monday in the barracks,” said Frank. “We came out of Covid, really, when everybody was trying to get back out into the real world.”

Frank is a tutor with Music Generation, Westmeath and when he was approached about ukulele lessons, he embraced the idea, along with fellow tutor Justin Ryan, with the aim of helping those who had already begun with the instrument to progress.

“So this is kind of the remnants of that group,” said Frank, “This is the gig band,” he added, pointing to his fellow musicians on Thursday evening.

He said there are about 10 regular members and “we’re aiming to try and see if we can get more recruits”.

“We normally do a Monday morning at ten o’clock, that’s for ones that we already know [how to play], and maybe we could do a complete beginner group now at this stage.”
