Lecture on Irish Civil War
A talk by Dr Gareth Prendergast on the key role played by the newly formed Irish National Army in securing the Treaty signed in 1921 and paving the way for the authority of the Free State to pursue a purely constitutional path for the newly created independent country.
Copies of his best selling book, based on his doctoral studies in UCC, will be available after the lecture on Wednesday 22 October at 8pm in the Greville Arms Hotel. All welcome, refreshments will be served. Dr Gareth Prendergast is a serving colonel in the Irish Defence Forces with over 30 years of service.
Academically he has a Masters of Military Art and Science from his year spent on the US Army Command and General Staff Course in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and he recently achieved his doctorate after six years study and research in the History Department of UCC.
Colonel Prendergast recently published his first book, ‘Clear – Hold – Build, How the Free State won the Irish Civil War (1922-1923)’ by Eastwood Publications. The book encompasses his previous experiences and military education as he spent more than six years researching how the newly established Irish National Army, utilised a counterinsurgency doctrine that allowed them to convert tactical victories into overall strategic success.
