Mickey Dan Murtagh, an active referee in hurling and football, has stepped away as manager of the Clonkill hurlers after two years.

Clonkill on the hunt for new hurling boss

Former Westmeath kingpins Clonkill are on the search for a new senior hurling manager after Mickey Dan Murtagh stepped away from the position following a two-year stint.

It is understood Murtagh stood down after last weekend’s senior hurling decider due to work commitments. He is also very active on the refereeing front in both hurling and football and took charge of the Senior 'B' hurling final replay on Tuesday.

Clonkill have traditionally chosen to work with their own local coaches and former manager Pat O’Toole was hugely successful over the years. Kevin O’Brien also led them to senior glory in the past but he is now managing Westmeath senior hurlers. David O’Reilly, Fergal Fagan and Paddy Dowdall are other possible candidates, although St Loman’s, Mullingar will be keen to keep Dowdall involved after a couple of very successful years in charge.

Meanwhile, Raharney will also be keen to bounce back next year. They installed former player John Shaw as their manager this season but were denied by Lough Lene Gaels in the semi-final.
