2,699 Westmeath farmers to benefit from funding

Over €5 million for 2,699 Westmeath farmers under Eco-Scheme

More than 2,600 farmers in County Westmeath will share in over €5 million in payments under the Eco-Scheme, part of a national €194.5 million support package announced by the Minister for Agriculture.

The scheme, which forms part of Ireland’s CAP Strategic Plan 2023–2027, rewards farmers for measures that protect and enhance the environment, water quality, biodiversity and climate.

Welcoming the announcement, Fianna Fáil Senator Paul Daly said the payments are a vital boost for local family farms and the wider rural economy.

“Farmers are the backbone of our economy and our rural communities,” Senator Daly said. “They deliver world-class produce that supports international trade, and it is essential that they are supported in doing so.”

He said Fianna Fáil remains committed to strengthening farm payments and ensuring the Common Agricultural Policy continues to deliver for Irish farmers.

“The payment rate of €66 per eligible hectare will provide meaningful support to over 110,000 farmers nationwide, including 2,699 here in Westmeath,” he said.

“This is a vital support for family farms, and Fianna Fáil is steadfast in our commitment to a strong CAP that works for farmers.”

Senator Daly confirmed that Eco-Scheme payments were starting last Tuesday: “Farmers across the constituency who applied to the scheme will see payments appearing in their bank accounts over the coming days,” he said, while urging anyone with outstanding documentation to submit it promptly to ensure payment.

The Eco-Scheme aims to reward farmers for adopting environmentally friendly practices such as improving soil health, protecting biodiversity and reducing emissions, ensuring Irish agriculture continues to play a leading role in sustainable food production.
