Driver recorded travelling at 174kmh in 100kmh zone
A driver was recorded travelling at 174kmh in a 100kmh zone on the N24 in Limerick, during the October bank holiday weekend roads policing operation.
The operation was in place from 7am on Thursday October 23 till 7am on Tuesday October 28 to ensure road safety during the October bank holiday weekend, according to the gardaí.
During that period, there was one fatality on the roads, and seven serious collisions resulted in eight individuals sustaining serious injuries.
Over the course of the operation, An Garda Síochána conducted 820 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints.
More than 4,790 breath tests and approximately 215 oral fluid tests were carried out.
There were 153 arrests for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Additionally, more than 3,000 drivers were detected exceeding speed limits throughout the weekend.
Notable speeds detected included:
• 91kmh in 50kmh zone in Santry, County Dublin
• 127kmh in 60kmh zone on N15 at Stranorlar, County Donegal
• 134kmh in 80kmh zone on R148 in Broadford, County Kildare
• 174kmh in 100kmh zone on N24 at Caherconlish, Limerick
Fixed Charge Notices issued for other road offences during this period included:
• Using Mobile Phones – 300
• Unaccompanied learner drivers – more than 140
• No seatbelts – more than 80
In addition
• 87 vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied
• More than 345 vehicles were seized for having no tax or insurance
An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road.
